Glad to see that my and my Necrons keep so many of you, ever so entertained. haha.
-1- Though I do not agree with some of the aforementioned cheese commentary i think Damian described the army best "immensely versatile". I believe Necrons are the top army out there or if not one of the top 3 on account of this alone. A well-balanced necron army list can take on practically any other list without needing to resort to a gimmick idea (like NidZilla lists or Scarab farms for example).
Ideally all codexes should play this way in my opinion - I'm not a fan of gimmick lists or being forced to use a gimmick list because that is the only way your codex can win.
"NECRONS NUMBA WAN"
-2- Imperial Guard
Truly a codex that encourages you to spam meat shield. Want to use a tonne of guys with a pea shooter, want to see a tonne of these guys die horribly and some how this is a good thing and lets you win in the end, use Imperial Guard, their victories are paved with the blood and bones of endless tide of flesh the imperium throws at the enemy. Each one armed with a pea shooter.
Love imperial guard armies they are good to play against because you will kill stuff which is exactly the problem each imperial guard unit is a trap. You charge in wipe them and the rest of the gunline vaporises you with a 100 str 3 shots, or 20 Mortar shots, or (like one game i played ) 18 lascannons.
Their ability to aborb casualties and still have obscene firepower to counter attack is fantastic. The advent of fliers & fortifications, the ability to focus your shooting into specific unit locations (spearhead, flanks or rear) and the nerf to assaulting units has reinforced the competitivess of this list.
"IMPERIAL GUARD - NUMBA TU"
-3- Grey Knights/Space Wolves
They both roughly fill that same niche though Grey Knights do take the lead on account of having a newer codex. The Grey Knights fluff has great comedic value as Grey Knights just seem to take the urinate in 40k. Carving your name into a Demon Primarch's heart and live to tell the tale todo Nique purely because said character is just bad ass is a joke and typical Matt Word (makes me greatful that he was in a less imaginative mood when he wrote necrons though he must have been drunk when he let necrons ally with blood angels).
Disgusting close combat unit, psychic abilities up the wazu and a walker with a jump pack. The dreadknight (i think its called) is a crap concept and is pretty disgusting on the battlefield.
"Grey Knight NUMBA TREE"
On cheese and other smelly tingsEvery army has the potential for cheesemongering.
